Whitney, Justin and Family Balboa Park Portraits

It’s no wonder why a Balboa Park portraits session always brings lovely photos. Shooting around the nice architecture and landscaping is fun and brings uniquely creative shots. But what’s even more fun with portrait sessions is being able to spend a little time with such nice families like Whitney and Justin’s.

I’m so happy to have captured that moment for the couple! Congratulations to both of you on your engagement!

I’ve actually photographed Whitney, Justin and daughter Sierra before, when I photographed Whitney’s graduation for Columbia College’s Commencement. I think she knew then that at some point they’d also like to have a dedicated portrait session, so when Justin’s family came into town it made for the perfect occasion.

Getting families together can be hard sometimes because like a lot of us we’ve relocated and don’t live nearby. So capturing the time when families come together is can be special and important, and it’s something I’ve had the pleasure of being called upon to capture a number of times. And with all the attractions that San Diego has to offer, it’s easy to find a great location for a shoot, like we did for Whitney and Justin’s family’s Balboa Park portraits.

I tend to think of a Balboa Park portraits session as a ‘walkabout photoshoot’ because I like to walk around and stop at different locations  to shoot, thereby creating a variety of poses and views in portrait photography. By shooting in at least 5 or more places around the park, a nice mix of shots results. In just a short walking distance, or even by just changing view point, a whole new perspective can open up, resulting in an interesting set of new photos. For the same reasons, Balboa Park is also a very popular location where I also like to create wedding photography.

Balboa Park is the nation’s largest urban cultural park. Home to 15 major museums, renowned performing arts venues, beautiful gardens and the San Diego Zoo, the Park has an ever-changing calendar of museum exhibitions, plays, musicals, concerts, and classes—all in the beautiful and timeless setting of this must-see San Diego attraction.
